It can be as out there as an experimental Polia tactile switch, to a silent workhorse switch, or even an excellent speed switch. Kailh's low-profile CHOC line are also gaining popularity with those building portable keyboards. Creator of the BOX design IP56 Rated (dust & moisture) Decades old brand The Kailh Collection Premium Crafting Kailh came onto the scene as a better-built Cherry and has evolved into a very well-respected switch company. The quality is superb, and Kailh is unafraid to experiment and collaborate. Kailh switches undergo minor tweaks over the years (called tooling changes) that really add up. Because of the consistent retooling of their product lines, SwitchCaptain is careful to ensure we're only selling the most recent version of any Kailh switches, directly from Kailh (Kaihua). Some of best tolerances out there (very little wobble, very consistent quality) Silent Sleeper hits (Our Kailh Silent Brown and Pink are two of our fastest selling switches) Durable (some of the highest endurance ratings) Strong pins, do not bend as easy Customizing While they're great right out of the box. Kailh switches respond well to targeted modifications, such as a spring swap or stem modification. Users have reported improvements applying Krytox 205g0 to the switch and Krytox GPL 105 to the springs. The World of Counterfeits and Old Stock Unfortunately, old stock and counterfeits are in heavy circulation. It is the reason SwitchCaptain was started. Wherever you purchase, read the reviews. If there is mention of missing pins, uneven housing, pins not fitting into standard format keyboards, etc, chances are the switch is counterfeit. Ask which tooling is used, they may be selling old stock. If the ask seems too good to be true... I actually didn't mean to buy the silent version of the browns, but ultimately decided to keep them and get normal browns for my other keyboard when I can afford them. The silent browns are very similar to the normal browns, however, they add a tiny rubber piece on the top and the bottom of the stem. The bottom piece softens the downpress (assuming you bottom out of course) and the top piece softens the release (which may actually be the loudest part of any linears.) Combined with an appropriately quiet casing, I've found these to actually be quieter than most, if not all, ordinary membrane keyboards (I don't know how they would compare with a membrane keyboard built for silence however.) O-rings are probably not really necessary, but would obviously improve their silence a tiny bit further all the same. Of interesting note here: the main sound that they do make is much lower frequency and sort of "duller" rather than the sharp high pitched tap normal switches make (particularly upon release.) This means that even if they were louder than they are they are likely going to bother people significantly less anyway. This does come at a cost however. It gives them a "squishier" feel for lack of a better word. They feel slightly less like proper mechanical linear switches and a little more like actual membrane keyboard keys. They're still significantly better of course, but this may be less satisfying for your personal use keyboard compared to the more linear press of unsilenced linears. I would particularly recommend that they should be excellent for any sort of environment where the noise level would affect others.I'm coming to these browns from completely linear pinks (from which I ultimately removed the clickbars, making them non-clicky linears.) It's hard for me to grade the tactile bump as I don't have much to directly compare with, but I will say that it feels fairly satisfying. I think the silencing bumpers might very slightly interfere with the tactile feel, but I am uncertain. If they do it's not by a lot I think. Overall I would say they have a good feedback that seems to work well for feeling when a key is pressed -- even if pressed very slowly (which is certainly not the case for non-tactile linears.)These share the same basic design as most of Kailh's "Box" switches, which I've always felt was a particularly well designed switch. A solid thick casing and a very smooth linear movement. I believe these should hold up for a very long time.
